The South Pole Energy Challenge (SPEC)

A 1000 kilometer journey surviving solely off renewable technologies.

On November 15, 2017, I will be embarking on a 60-day expedition to the South Pole. Over the course of this journey, we will be surviving solely off renewable technologies for our cooking, heating, and power needs. If successful, we will be the first to achieve this in Polar History.  The team consists of my Father, Robert Swan, Mountaineer Martin Barnett, and Filmmaker Kyle O’Donoghue.

The renewable technology we will use:

-Solar Ice Melter, designed by NASA, integrated on our sleds.
-2nd generation biofuel from wood chips in Bangalore.

-Algae cooking stove from Germany.

-GoalZero lithium batteries.

-Passive Solar heated thermos.

Whilst surviving off these technologies during the journey, we will thread together a narrative on walking the talk with active solutions surrounding energy and our carbon footprint. This will be broadcasted with the intent of getting as many people involved with The ClimateForce Challenge.

Bringing together the support, logistics, funding, team, and media plan to support this journey has been a two-year uphill battle. Working from our ‘cozy’ home office in California, my father and I have joined shoulder against a shoulder in both our shared pursuit and struggle. It has not been easy, but for all the steps yet to come, I am excited and grateful.
